I love the community, too! My local chapter's MLs actually all quit NaNo earlier this year because of how the organization was treating MLs. Our fearless moderators just renamed the Discord server they'd set up years ago, so we all still get to chat! Turns out are community is as active and connected without affiliation to the national organization. :)
I'm also thinking about creating an unaffiliated local event called "30 Days of Writing" that's more Shut Up and Write style: the goal is time spent writing, not a certain word count. And it won't coincide with Thanksgiving. 😂
Much like Twitter, I worry that we'll lose the only good thing that comes with NaNoWriMo: the community.
I understand the stress of a daily word count may be too much for some, but having others pulling along with you has always made it fun.
